What is a Walking Network Plan?
Walking Network Plan identifies the key walking connections between the places that matter most in daily life, such as schools, town centres and local shops, parks and leisure facilities, public transport stops and community services, helping guide future investment in footpaths and safe walking routes over the next decade.
Why is Council doing this now?
Council applied for Walking Local Government Grant funding across a number of our townships and was successful this round for Tin Can Bay and Cooloola Cove.
While this stage focuses on those two communities, we’re committed to continuing to apply for funding so we can progressively support walking network planning right across the Gympie region.
Does this mean new footpaths will be built straight away?
Not immediately.
This stage is about planning. The feedback we receive will help identify the priority connections and shape a clear action plan for each community. Once the Walking Network Plans are finalised, we’ll be in a strong position to apply for additional Active Transport funding to progress priority routes into detailed design and construction.
What types of improvements are being considered?
The Walking Network Plan may identify things like:
Not every suggestion can be delivered immediately, but your feedback helps prioritise future works.
Who can have their say?
Whether you walk every day, occasionally, with kids, with a pram, with a mobility aid, with the dog, or not much at all! We want to hear from you.
If there are places you enjoy walking to, or places you avoid because they don’t feel connected nor safe, your experience matters. If you live, work or spend time in Tin Can Bay or Cooloola Cove, this is for you.
How will my feedback be used?
All feedback will be reviewed by the project team and used to shape the draft Walking Network Plans. It will also help us build a strong case for future funding to deliver the priority connections on the ground.
We will share consultation results once engagement closes so you can see how your input has shaped the plan.
Why just Tin Can Bay and Cooloola Cove?
This grant funding specifically supports planning in Tin Can Bay and Cooloola Cove.
However, Council intends to use the same approach across other townships in future to build a region-wide walking network.
How long is consultation open?
The consultation period runs from 23 February to 29 March 2026.
You can complete the online survey, drop a pin on the interactive map, or attend one of the pop-up or walking sessions.
What happens next?
Once consultation closes, all feedback will be reviewed and analysed by the project team. Draft Walking Network Plans will then be prepared, and a summary of what we heard will be shared with the community. The final plans will be presented to Council and submitted to TMR. From there, we’ll be in a strong position to seek additional funding to progress priority projects into detailed design and, ultimately, construction.
