Types of Parks and Recreation Spaces

Includes local neighbourhood parks, regional parks (e.g. Lake Alford Recreational Park, Nelson Reserve, Bert Smith Memorial Park, Lawrie Hanson Park), district parks (e.g. Marc Dower Park, Chatsworth Park, Les Lee Park, Jack Spicer Park, Kilkivan Lions Park), local parks, reserves, trails, natural areas and other public open spaces managed by Council.

Includes sport fields, courts, aquatic facilities, skate parks, BMX facilities, recreation centres and other places used for organised sport and active recreation.

Can provide a wide range of opportunities that cater to a broad cross-section of a region’s population and visitors. These parks differ in size depending on their locality but are often major destinations for residents and visitors.

An example of a 'Regional Park' in our region would be Lake Alford.

Larger parks that service several suburbs, or whole communities depending on the surrounding population density. District parks provide a range of facilities and activity spaces for recreation and are typically located near, or are well-connected to schools, community centres, halls or activity centres. 

Often smaller parks that feature basic embellishments such as seats, bins. Play equipment is not required but may be present in some parks. These spaces are typically suitable for dog walking and other activities that do not require extensive infrastructure and maintenance.

Space that is wholly or partially covered with trees, shrubs or other natural vegetation. These spaces can support nature-based recreation such as bushwalking or bird watching but primarily function as key areas of biodiversity and ecological significance.
