FAQs - Apex Playground
Why does the Apex playground need to be renewed?
The playground equipment has reached the end of it's service life and requires renewal to ensure it remains useable. This gives Council an opportunity to look at how the space can continue to meet community needs now and into the future. This includes gathering community sentiment around what you love about the existing playground and how we can make it even better for generations to come.
Will the new playground be the same as the current one?
Not necessarily. The renewal is an opportunity to look at what is working well, what is valued by the community and what could be improved.
Can I suggest playground equipment or other ideas?
Yes. We want to hear your ideas. Community feedback will help inform the next stage of planning and design, although any future changes will still need to be considered alongside things like budget, safety, accessibility and ongoing maintenance.
Will accessibility be considered?
Yes. Accessibility will be one of the things considered as planning and design progress, along with safety, functionality, maintenance and how the space is used overall. We want to make sure the playground and parklands can be accessed and used by our whole community.
What about the pedal car?
We know the pedal car is a much-loved part of Nelson Reserve and has strong community value. However due to the age of the asset and the cost of maintenance, it has been out of order for a long time. Its future will be considered carefully as part of this process, along with practical issues like maintenance, safety, durability and long-term sustainability. This includes exploring ways the pedal car can be creatively reimagined through the upgraded park design.
Will the pedal car be replaced?
No decision has been made at this stage. We understand there is a strong connection to the pedal car, but we also need to consider whether features like this are practical and sustainable to maintain over the long term.
Can I give feedback specifically about the pedal car?
Yes. If the pedal car is important to you, we’d encourage you to tell us why. That feedback will help us understand its value to the community as planning progresses. We would also love to hear your suggestions for how the existing pedal car can be reimagined through a future park design, connecting with people's memories of using the original pedal car.
When will the new playground be built?
The feedback gathered through this process will help inform the design of the renewed playground. Timing for construction will then depend on design development and approval processes. Updates will be provided as the project progresses.
